“After suiting up briefly for the Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets in the late 90s, defenceman Mike Gaul hoped to attract attention by having strong year in the AHL in 2001-02. A fine playmaker with good size, he demonstrated plenty of offensive talent in junior, the minors and Europe.

Born in Lachine, Quebec, Gaul starred in the QAAA with Lac St-Louis. He was chosen 262nd overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 1991 after playing a year at St. Lawrence University in the ECAC. He then joined the Laval Titan of the QMJHL where he registered 112 assists in 129 games.

After two productive years with Knoxville of the ECHL, Gaul joined ETC Timmendorf of Germany in 1996-97. He returned to North America the next year and notched 59 points in 60 games for the Hershey Bears of the AHL. His strong performance earned him a contract from the New York Islanders but he was soon traded to Colorado. Gaul was chiefly a farmhand for the powerful Avalanche and spent most of the next two years providing offense in Hershey. After scoring 69 points in 65 games, he was named to the AHL second all-star team. In July, 2000, the crafty rearguard came to terms with the Columbus Blue Jackets but only played a pair of games for them. The rest of his time was spent with the Syracuse Crunch where he scored 61 points and was voted on to the league’s second all-star unit once again.”
